Michael S. Paulsen is a Midwest native who grew up in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe, Kansas. He graduated from high school with proficiency in ceramic arts. He opened a home studio and started his specialized studies at Pittsburgh State University. He later transferred to the University of Kansas and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design. Michael and his wife followed their adult son to the Rocky Mountains in late 2025. They found an alpine desert home and moved the studio to a serene space flanked by the San Luis River and large Cottonwood trees. Nestled at 8,000 feet in Colorado's San Luis Valley, the couple is enjoying small-community living and finding inspiration in the great outdoors.
At hilltoppots studio, Master Artist Michael S. Paulsen applies specialized techniques to complex forms, glazes, and firing. He offers a curated selection of ergonomic, functional pottery colored in a palette inspired by natural elements: soil, rock, vegetation, and sand. With 40 years of experience, Michael prioritizes functionality over fashion, combining ancient and modern techniques to create subdued earth-toned pieces that are remarkably thin, yet sturdy. Patrons are often amazed by the technicality and craftsmanship of his pottery. Discover the artistry and utility of his handmade pottery at hilltoppots studio and gallery.
